“Colorado is one of the most hail-prone states in the U.S.” Hail season runs from April 15 to September 15 with the majority of hail damage occurring from June to August (CoCoRaHS, 2016). If you suspect that you have a hail damaged roof, we have some guidelines below to help you.
It can sometimes be difficult to know if you have hail damage after a storm. As a guideline, any hail larger than a pea may cause hail damage to your home. To know if your home has hail damage, check the downspout runoff. If you find granules that wash down the downspout after a storm, that is a significant indicator of hail damage. In addition, if your vehicle has hail damage it is likely that your roof does as well. When you look at your roof from the ground and noticeably have dents or dings on your roof or if tree branches have fallen from the storm, contact a roofing specialist to inspect your roof for damage.
Be advised that hail damage may not appear until weeks or months after a hail storm. The impact from hail can penetrate the granular surface and compromise the integrity of the asphalt coating that ultimately keeps your home water-tight. According to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS, 2015):
The roof is your home’s first line of defense against costly natural disasters such as hailstorms. Once the roof fails, it exposes other parts of your home to damage, which can lead to a breakdown of your home…To keep your home’s roof in top condition, it’s critical that you routinely inspect it, quickly repair any wear and tear, and replace it when necessary.
If your neighbors are receiving hail damage adjustments then call Rock’s Roofing, Inc. to inspect your home for hail damage. If the damage goes un-repaired for too long, it can cause water damage to the structural frame of your home and cause more serious and costly problems in the future.
